My first blog post and gallery is from this Prospect Park Boathouse Wedding. I was assisting with Loreto Caceres Photography, who has been and continues to be an amazing mentor to me.
Ah the world of wedding photography. After shooting tons of portraits of friends, family and people I came across, people started telling me, “hey, you’re really good,” or “you have a great eye.” I began thinking to myself hey, I might be able to make some money out of this. That is when my photography hobby began to double as a job.
I made a common mistake in thinking it was going to be easy. Start an Instagram account, get a logo and a website, and start charging people money. NOT! Insurance, website fees, how to I deliver the images, how do I keep track of inquires and when is the money due? What goes into a contract and why is SEO so damn complicated? Thankfully, I found a few colleagues and friends who have made the mistakes already and were able to walk me through the hard parts.
I interviewed to assist and second shoot with someone whose work I really admired, Loreto Caceres. She is an extremely talented photographer and runs a successful business specializing in Weddings and Elopements. Quickly after our meeting I was in and excited to learn. Our first wedding was in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, a beautiful venue tucked away in the park. While assisting, I closely watched as she subtly directed the couple during portraits, took charge during family and bridal party photos, and captured the night’s events. Further, she let me walk with my camera at times also, which is when I was able to capture Ali & Darryl in the images below.
Prospect Park Boathouse is an amazing venue. Hidden deep inside the park, there are tons of trees, trails, bridges and ponds to use as in your photography.
